The ICSB Forum for Entrepreneurs and Micro-Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (MSMEs)

Creating a Shared Future for Entrepreneurs and MSMEs

Since 2010 the global outlook for entrepreneurs, start-ups, micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) has changed dramatically. As MSMEs now play a large role in economic development, they have become a priority for many governments around the world. Governments are moving rapidly to shore up support for entrepreneurs, start-ups, and MSMEs through new initiatives. Furthermore, policies are being formulated to further integrate MSMEs into the economic formula of developing economies, with the goal of equipping these businesses to succeed in the global marketplace.

Despite these government actions, MSMEs are facing direct challenges from many fronts. Obstacles include automation, a lack of skilled workers and quality jobs, and retail and service consolidation. Because of these challenges, the balance between a country’s economic well-being and its social integration continues to widen, as is evident by the marginalization of many minority groups within developing economies. Essentially, for many stakeholders, doing well economically is not the same as doing social good. For this reason, the UN created Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2015 to tackle these global challenges. Given the economic significance of MSMEs, the UN has recognized that these types of businesses have a critical role to play in advancing the SDGs. However, in order to achieve this goal, the role of MSMEs must be further articulated and enhanced, as current initiatives, programs, messages, and policies diverge in significant ways that fragment the potential for a global movement led by MSMEs.
