TALENT, EFFORT AND RECOGNITION

The Annual Luminary Awards recognize individuals and organizations that persistently provide extraordinary support for entrepreneurs and small business enterprises [SMEs]. Each year the ICSB Foundation bestows three Luminary Awards, one in each of three entrepreneurial categories:

  • Practice: Success in founding and development of enterprises in either for profit or not for profit categories.
  • Research / Academia: Research or education/training for creation and developing SMEs.
  • Policy: Leadership in public policy that supports entrepreneurs and SME founders.
  • Luminary Award winners are individuals or organizations that are exemplary in enhancing entrepreneurship and SME creation, education and training, and leadership in the public policymaking sector as listed above.
  • Winners of the Luminary Awards receive recognition at the GW Global Entrepreneurship Research & Policy Conference a desktop trophy, and their names are inscribed on the Hall of Fame wall at the ICSB Foundation Central Office in Washington, D.C. They will also be honoured at the annual ICSB Foundation Gala Awards Dinner.

Claudio Gubitosi
Founder and Director of the Giffoni Film Festival

Claudio Gubitosi was born in Giffoni Valle Piana, near Salerno. A cinema devotee from a young age, he founded in 1971 the International Childrens and Youth Film Festival of Giffoni Valle Piana, later to become the Giffoni Film Festival, and today the Giffoni Experience, one of the most highly acclaimed events in the cinematographic and cultural world. He has received numerous awards from both public and private organizations for his work, including the AGIS Golden Cross, the Timone d’Oro for tourism, the Follaro d’Oro and acknowledgments from prestigious social, cultural and economic organizations at both national and international level. He currently lectures on cinema for children and on the organization of events in numerous Italian and foreign universities. He launched the Giffoni World Alliance; and exported the formula of the GFF to other nations.

Dr. Young-Sup Joo
Distinguished Professor, Graduate School of Engineering, Korea University
Former Minister, Small & Medium Business Administration, Republic of Korea

Dr. Joo is Distinguished Professor with Korea University. He is a senior member of the National Academy of Engineering of Korea and is the Chairman for the Special Committee of Manufacturing Innovation. From January 2016 to July 2017. He was Administrator (SME Minister) of SMBA(Small & Medium Business Administration), responsible for nurturing and developing SMEs and start-ups for the Republic of Korea. Dr. Joo was a member of the National Economic Advisory Council, a consultative body for the Korea President from August 2015 to January 2016. Since 2013, he has been engaged with Seoul National University as Professor (visiting) and Chairman of Industry-University Collaboration Committee at College of Engineering. In June 2010, Dr. Joo began serving as the Managing Director (MD) for the Korean government in charge of the Korean core industry sector at the Office of Strategic R&D Planning (OSP), Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy (MOTIE, formerly MKE). Prior to his appointment as Managing Director, he spent 30 years with the automotive and electronics industry, and took many leadership positions at Bontec, GE Thermometrics Korea and Asia Pacific, and executive at Daewoo Electronics. Dr. Joo previously served as President & CEO at Hyundai Autonet. He holds a B.S. in mechanical engineering, an M.S. in production engineering, and a PhD in industrial engineering from Pennsylvania State University.

Dr. George T. Solomon
Director of the Center For Entrepreneurial Excellence

Professor of Management at The George Washington University (GWU)

Dr. George T. Solomon is currently a Professor of Management and co-founder and Director for the Center for Entrepreneurial Excellence (CFEE) at the George Washington University School of Business. He also serves as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Small Business Management. Dr. Solomon is the past president of the United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (USASBE) and the International Council for Small Business (ICSB). From 1976 until 2004, Dr. Solomon held various managerial positions at the SBA including director of the Office of Special Initiatives and deputy associate administrator for Business Initiatives Education and Training where he managed a staff of six to fitteen professionals. Dr. Solomon has published and edited over 130 articles, books of readings, book chapters, reference materials and proceedings articles in both the areas of entrepreneurship/small business management and organizational behavior & dynamics. He is a colleague of the Creative Education Foundation, a Justin G. Longenecker Fellow of the United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship, a fellow of the Small Business Institute Director’s Association and a Wilford White Fellow of the ICSB.

Dr. Erik K. Winslow
Director, CFEE, Professor Emeritus of Management

Dr. Erik K. Winslow, co-founder and co-director of the Center for Entrepreneurial Excellence, has been a source of inspiration and motivation for the Entrepreneurship program at GW. Dr. Winslow specializes in entrepreneurship and succession and survival of family enterprises; organizational climate formation; organizational change; management and leadership in technical and professional environments; stimulating creative management strategies; and the development of motivational environments. He has published over 30 articles and chapters, has edited numerous professional publications in the aforementioned areas, and was inducted in 2013 as a distinguished Wilford White Fellow. He is the current chairman of the GWSB Department of Management and Director of CFEE. His education includes a bachelor of science (psychology) from The Pennsylvania State University, and a master of science, psychology, from Case Western Reserve Universi- ty. At Case Western Reserve University, he worked closely with Frederick I. Herzberg as an assistant professor of psychology and staff associate for Psychological Research Services and the Center for Industrial Mental Health.
