Saleha Khumawala

Dr. Saleha Khumawala is the Robert Grinaker Professor of Accounting and the Founding Director of the SURE™ (Stimulating Urban Renewal through Entrepreneurship) Program at Bauer College of Business, University of Houston. She obtained her Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and teaches and does research in the fields of Government and Non-Profit Accounting and Social Entrepreneurship. She is widely published, is an active member in several academic & professional organizations, has made numerous presentations at national and international conferences and has led the Study Abroad India Program since 2002. She is also the coauthor of Government and Not-for-Profit Accounting: Concepts and Practices, 8th edition, and coauthor of Governmental Accounting, Bloomberg’s Tax & Accounting Policy & Portfolio Series. Founded and developed the innovative SURE™ Program-Stimulating Urban Renewal through Entrepreneurship which is an educational platform that creates a value-added partnership between UH students, industry experts and under-resourced entrepreneurs. The two new courses in social innovation give Bauer students experiential learning that embeds service learning with two key goals. To train students in the human-centered and other key skills they need and to economically empower under-resourced entrepreneurs in local communities. To date (as of Dec. 2020), the SURE™ Program has trained over 350 students, educated 1,300 + aspiring entrepreneurs and launched or materially expanded over 450 businesses. The SURE™ Program and Dr. Khumawala have received numerous awards and accolades including the Piper Professor 2018 award, and the 2019 University Economic Development Association’s National Award of Excellence for Innovation + Talent. Currently in the process of establishing a Center for Economic Inclusion and a SURE CDFI.
